I may or may not have mentioned in the past that I’m one of a trio in a Brunch Club; the name of said club shall remain nameless, for anonymity’s sake, and also this article has a PG rating.
Irregardless, last Sunday we ventured into the great land of Northfield, to indulge in our club traditions. First off, I was beyond excited, not only for the fact that we hadn’t convened in a couple of months, because SUMMER, and our summer schedules were insane, but also because I was itching for my brunchy fix, and I had never been to the Atlantic City Country Club before, AND the Club is rife with history so my history-nerd-spidey-senses were thrumming the entire car ride there. I’m sure you, dear reader, may have visited this particular establishment, but on the off chance you haven’t, let’s get a little overview.
As one of America’s oldest and most prolific golf clubs, Atlantic City Country Club (built in 1897) has been home to many firsts, including being the “Birthplace of the Birdie.” I must admit, I had zero knowledge of golf as a sport until recently, with the exception of knowing that St. Andrews in Scotland was the first golf course, because when I visited Scotland and stepped on the land I said, “hey look there’s a golf course!”, and the tour guide said, “right, yes, it’s the first one ever built, we’re kind of famous for it…” ((insert “The More You Know” gif here)). So, when I saw AC Country Club was the “Birthplace of the Birdie”, I instantly took to the Google. I said “Google, tell me what a birdie is”, and Google responded with, “a birdie is a golf term that refers to a score of one stroke under par for a hole.” To which my kneejerk reaction was to then ask, “what’s a par”, to which Google then took a deep breath, rolled its eyes and I fell down an internet golf hole.
I am now a semi pro golfer, but I digress. I will spare you the very long list of historical facts about how gorgeous the seaside links course is, with its finely manicured fairways and large sloping green complexes protected by deep sand, and how it’s been a hub of social activity since its inception, because let’s face it, this is me talking, and we’d be here for hours. Just note, many a famous and infamous face passed these halls and grounds, like NJ State Assemblyman James “Sonny” Fraser (there’s a whole room named after him!), Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, and some many others, one of which rhymes with “Shnal Papone”. Sure, they’re a fabulous golf course and club, but we’re here to talk about their brunch.
Nestled in their cozy yet majestic Tap Room Bar and Grille, adorned with lush wood tones, historical chachkas, and a gorgeous view of the grounds, they offer flavors for any taste. From traditional soft scramble (eggs), bacon, breakfast sausage, Nutella stuffed French toast, bagels and breakfast pastries, make-your-own waffles, to salads, charcuterie, shrimp and crab cocktails, salmon cakes, savory chicken, braised steak, carving stations,, eggs benedict and omelets made to order, you have your fill and then some. And that’s not even including the desserts! I distinctly recall exclaiming at one point to the ladies, “I’m just so glad I wore my baggy jeans”. For only $45 you can indulge, then go back and indulge some more, and then when you’re so ridiculously engorged, you can go back again, and again, and again and- I should also mention it also includes a complimentary mimosa on arrival, so of course I drank everyone’s at the table. It was such an amazing experience; I felt compelled to share.
Fun Fact Alert: you don’t have to be a golfer to enjoy all the benefits and perks at the Tap Room Bar and Grille, you can get a social membership for only $50 annually. With this membership you can enjoy discounts on your lunch, dinner or special event, every time you visit. And they have so much going on right now. They’re hosting quite a lavish Thanksgiving buffet dinner on November 28th, with seatings at 12 pm and 3 pm. $65 for adults (with a complimentary glass of champagne upon arrival)… just hide yours from me if I’m there…), $25 for children 12 and under, and kids 3 and under eat free. Beyond that, Santa is making a stop along with Mrs. Claus and Curly the Elf, on Saturday, December 21st 9 am to 12:30 pm! Enjoy a delightful breakfast, professional photos with Santa, group sing-a-longs with Curly the Elf, Naughty & Nice Certificates from the North Pole, plus so much more!
